Politician Ville Mykkänen killed in Ukraine while fighting in Luhansk

Ville Mykkänen, a 26-year-old politician from Pyhäjärvi, who volunteered to fight in Ukraine, has been killed in the Luhansk region earlier in August. The news was announced by Veteran Warriors, which released a tribute to Mykkänen last night. Prior to his departure, Mykkänen served as the chairman of the Centre Youth in Northern Ostrobothnia and was actively involved in the organization.

The news of Mykkänen’s death has shocked his fellow party members. “It’s an incredibly sobering and shocking piece of news. As stated in the announcement from his family, Ville was a principled man, and that was evident in everything he did,” said Jere Tapio, the chairman of the Centre Youth.

Tapio, who is from Oulu, expressed that he knew Mykkänen personally. They worked together on the Centre Youth Board last year before Mykkänen decided to go to Ukraine. “In our collaboration, I learned that Ville was always the first to step up when hands were needed—be it candidates for elections or support for other candidates. What I admired in him was his passion and dedication to the causes he believed in,” Tapio mentioned.

He described Mykkänen as a long-time activist and a respected member of his community. “A significant piece is missing from our community. We want to extend our warmest condolences to his loved ones and show deep respect for the sacrifice he made in Ukraine,” he added.

According to the memorial published by Veteran Warriors, Mykkänen made the decision to go to Ukraine in late autumn 2023. “He had a strong will to defend a free nation. Ultimately, under the fighting name ‘Flurry,’ he made the ultimate sacrifice by losing his life for the sake of freedom,” the statement read. Mykkänen had openly shared his decision to join as a volunteer fighter on social media platforms.
