Reykjanesbær offers free swimming access to capital region residents amid hot water repairs
Reykjanesbær is offering free swimming access to residents of the capital region amid ongoing repairs to the hot water supply, which will affect certain areas from Monday evening until Wednesday. The initiative is a response to previous disruptions, similar to those experienced last winter when hot water was unavailable in the Suðurnes region due to a lava flow damaging infrastructure that supplies hot water from Svartsengi.
Mayor Kjartan Már Kjartansson stated that the idea came from local residents who expressed the need for such support on social media. He emphasized the importance of community feedback and how the town authorities wanted to recognize and reciprocate the hospitality shown to them by residents when the hot water issue arose previously.
The access to the local swimming facilities, including a dedicated indoor play area for children, is meant to accommodate those impacted by the hot water outages in Hafnarfjörður, Kópavogur, Álftanes, Garðabær, Norðlingaholt, Breiðholt, Hólmsheiði, and Almannadal.
This gesture aims to remind residents of the solidarity within the community during challenging times and to alleviate some of the inconveniences caused by the ongoing work. The Mayor highlighted the importance of providing accessible recreational facilities during such repairs, ensuring that residents can still enjoy the benefits of the town’s services.
