A magnitude 3 earthquake was recorded in Bárðarbunga, located in Vatnajökull, at 4:40 AM this morning. Following this tremor, several smaller aftershocks occurred; however, there are no signs of volcanic unrest in the area. Earthquakes are common in Bárðarbunga.

A similar-sized earthquake was detected the night before, and since the beginning of the year, a total of sixteen earthquakes of magnitude 3 or higher have been recorded. The largest of these occurred on April 21, measuring 5.4.

According to Iceland’s Meteorological Office, these latest earthquakes are considered minor in the context of Bárðarbunga.

In contrast, the Reykjanes Peninsula remains calm, with no significant changes reported. “The situation is very much as it has been in recent days,” stated a duty natural hazard specialist. “Earthquakes continue to occur, and activity has been gradually increasing,” she added.
