Logi Bergmann says he has read his last news bulletin

Iceland, journalism, media

After nearly 40 years as a journalist, Logi Bergmann Eiðsson says he misses writing columns but not reporting the news. He made the remarks in an interview published by mbl.is.

Logi, who now lives in the United States and works on various projects, said he had particularly enjoyed writing columns for Morgunblaðið. “There is so much interesting material to write about, not least current affairs,” he said. “But I don’t miss the news. I have read my last news bulletin.”

He worked as a journalist for Þjóðviljinn and Morgunblaðið before becoming a reporter and news presenter at RÚV and later Stöð 2, where he also worked on a range of programmes. Most recently, he worked at K100, a radio station operated by Árvakur.

Logi said he had seen major changes in the media during his career, from the heyday of party newspapers to intense competition between television stations, particularly in news. He said that competition had now ended, with only one television news bulletin remaining, on RÚV.

He called that a troubling development, saying competition brought out the best in people and that without it there was a risk of becoming complacent. He also said that edited media faced growing challenges, and that outlets could no longer wait until the next morning to publish a scoop or until the evening to report a story.

The full interview appears in Morgunblaðið’s Sunday supplement.
