A 57-year-old man has been remanded in custody by the North Savo District Court on Friday, suspected of arson and serious property damage. He is believed to have started two fires in Nilsiä, Kuopio, during July and August.

The first incident occurred in the early morning hours of July 26, when a waste collection shelter on Laatokantie 4 was completely destroyed by fire. Following this, on August 5, another fire broke out at Laatokantie 8, devastating three residential units. Emergency services received alerts about this fire shortly after 1 AM, by which time the flames had already spread to the roof. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

Police apprehended a man at the scene, suspected of igniting the fire. He was initially detained but later released. After further investigation, officers arrested him again and sought to have him remanded in custody on Friday.

A technical examination of the site found no natural cause for the fires. The police are still looking for witnesses related to these incidents, especially anyone who might have observed individuals in the vicinity of the affected properties prior to the fires.
