A daycare centre in Nenonpelto, Pieksämäki, has suffered severe fire damage and will be rendered unusable, Yle reports. No one was inside the building when the fire broke out.

Rescue crews from the South Savo Rescue Department were still working to extinguish the fire, which had spread to the roof structures. The roof had to be dismantled, and the work was expected to continue through the morning.

The smoke is not expected to pose a risk to the surrounding area, although its smell may reach nearby homes. The fire is not at risk of spreading. The cause has not yet been determined.

The daycare centre has about 25 to 30 children in two groups on weekdays and is closed at weekends. The city will meet at noon to decide how to arrange childcare from Monday. Parents will be informed of the plan during the weekend.
