Three earthquakes northwest of Kolbeinsey were the largest recorded there in the past year, mbl.is reported, citing Jarþrúður Óskar Jóhannesdóttir, a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
Seismic activity increased on Thursday morning. The strongest quakes, recorded later in the afternoon, measured 3.4 and 3.5.
Earthquakes occur at the location, Jarþrúður said, and a swarm was recorded slightly farther south. She described the increased activity as normal, saying there was nothing to indicate a specific event and that the quakes were occurring along a plate boundary.
