A fire caused extensive damage to the Nytjamarkaðurinn second-hand market in Kópavogur overnight, mbl.is reported. The fire service was alerted at around 2am.
All four fire stations and their crews were sent to the scene, said Stefán Kristinsson, a shift supervisor with the Capital Region Fire Department. The fire was intense at first, but fire compartments in the large industrial and commercial building kept it from spreading beyond one room. Smoke reached some other rooms.
Some residents left the building but were later allowed to return. An estimated 10 to 20 people were in the area, and no one was taken to hospital.
The last fire engines left at around 4am, after crews spent about two hours dealing with the blaze and extinguishing embers and hot spots. The building was also ventilated to clear smoke. The market suffered significant damage, and most or all of its contents may be destroyed, Kristinsson said.
