Iceland’s highest temperature on Monday reached 17.2C in Bakkagerði, in Borgarfjörður eystri in eastern Iceland, mbl.is reported. Seyðisfjörður also recorded warm weather, with a high of 15.4C.
The unusually high November temperatures are being driven by a strong area of high pressure over Scotland and a trough near Hvarf, bringing warm, moist southerly winds, according to a meteorologist at the Icelandic Met Office.
A weather front is expected to approach from the west overnight. Southerly winds will continue on Tuesday morning, becoming strong or gale-force in many places, with considerable rain. Conditions will improve in the northeast, while after the front passes the wind will turn southwesterly and ease, bringing a few showers first to western Iceland towards midday. Cooler air will follow, and temperatures will gradually fall.
