court case, Iceland, stalking

Iris Helga Jónatansdóttir denied bringing a jar said to contain a fetus she had miscarried to her former boyfriend’s home, mbl.is reported as the main hearing in her case opened at Reykjanes District Court on Monday.

She also denied sending the man’s mother a message asking what he had done with the fetus and where it was buried. Iris said people who undergo an abortion are not given the fetus in a jar afterwards, and said only men would make up such a story.

Iris is charged with stalking, defamatory allegations, forgery, false accusations and violations of child protection laws. Many of the charges concern her former boyfriend and his partner. She is also accused of offences against the partner’s parents and brother, two other men and their daughters.

The indictment alleges that Iris threatened the man, repeatedly went to his home, caused damage and behaved disruptively. It also says she distributed notes warning that he was violent and had a large amount of child sexual abuse material on his computer, and created fake social media accounts to continue the harassment.

Iris acknowledged going to the man’s home intending to speak with him. She said he had harassed her 12-year-old daughter by bringing her sweets and flowers, which the girl found inappropriate, and that her daughter still suffers the effects of the alleged harassment.

She admitted returning to the home and kicking the man’s car, saying she told police and that no damage was done. She also acknowledged returning a vase he had given her in an angry outburst, but denied deliberately breaking it. She said she had never claimed to have dropped it accidentally.

Police found fake social media accounts on Iris’s laptop and phone, but she denied creating them and said several people had access to her devices, including former housemates and her child’s father. She said her passwords were not secret. Investigators also found searches linked to her account about deleting and logging into Facebook accounts and creating email accounts without providing a phone number or other identity verification.
