Inspectors found irregularities and cheating in 21 of 22 kiosks visited in Copenhagen in early October, DR reports, citing a statement from the Ministry of Taxation and Growth.

The checks uncovered 1,050 illegal nicotine products, 352 e-cigarettes and 50 kilos of spirits products. Inspectors also found signs of mould in slushie and soft-ice machines at one kiosk, and fruit flies near the pick-and-mix sweets at another.

More than 341,800 kroner in cash was found during the operation. At one kiosk, inspectors found 149,000 kroner stored in three safes. One kiosk was closed immediately, according to the ministry.

Tax and Growth Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt called it provocative that so many kiosks were not following the rules. “There is a rotten culture in large parts of the kiosk environment, and we must continue strict and targeted inspections,” he said.

The kiosks were visited on October 6 and are in Nørrebro, Vesterbro, Amager, Nordvest and Indre By. Authorities said they will follow up with further inspections and checks of accounts.
