Soft drinks and sweets should be removed from kiosks in sports halls and replaced with fruit, water and other healthy choices, nutritionist and public health coordinator Snorri Patursson says, according to KVF.

Kiosks at sports halls across the country commonly sell soft drinks, crisps, cakes and sweets during children’s sports competitions. Patursson said children do not need those products in a sports environment, but need food and drinks that support their health and activity.

He acknowledged that clubs need income, but said children’s public health should not be funded through sweet sales. Fruit and other foods children genuinely need should be the obvious choice in kiosks, he said.

Patursson said changing what kiosks sell is necessary if society is to tackle growing problems with obesity and unhealthy eating habits.
