Landspítali hospital is considering reducing routine blood tests and other interventions that may offer little benefit to patients, as part of a new initiative, mbl.is reports. The campaign, called Vöndum valið, seeks staff suggestions for tests and treatments that provide little benefit or could cause harm.
Examples include unnecessary daily blood tests and urinary catheters inserted for convenience rather than medical need. The initiative is an Icelandic version of the international Choosing Wisely programme.
Helgi Kristinn Sigmundsson, director of emergency, internal medicine and rehabilitation services and chair of the initiative’s expert group, told mbl.is that its primary goal is to improve the quality of care and patient safety. Reducing waste and encouraging effective use of resources are also aims.
The expert group reviews proposals with the relevant medical specialties and healthcare professions. If a proposal is approved, it will be assigned a lead and an implementation plan, and its results will be measured. Helgi said the process is still being developed and that recommendations could include guidance as well as restrictions.
