One man has died at sea since last year’s memorial for those lost at sea, KVF reports. He was Eyðfinn Rólant Johansen, 69, from Miðvágur, who died aboard the trawler Stelkur on December 14.
This year’s memorial will be held on Sunday, November 1, All Saints’ Day. The public ceremony, organised by the Seamen’s Mission, will take place at Vinnuháskúlin in Tórshavn at 2pm.
The prime minister will speak, and priest Heri Joensen will lead a prayer. The prime minister will then lay a wreath at the memorial in the woodland in Tórshavn. A church service is scheduled for 8pm at the cathedral.
The public ceremony names people registered as residents of the Faroe Islands who died while working at sea, either through illness or an accident. A committee with representatives from seafarers’ organisations, the Shipowners’ Association, Vørn, the Ministry of Education, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Seamen’s Mission and the national church decides who is named.
