Grindavík, Iceland, search and rescue

Police have ended the search for the remains of Lúðvík Pétursson, who fell into a ground fissure in Grindavík in January 2024, and will not carry out further operations, mbl.is reports.

The seven-and-a-half-hour operation was conducted under the responsibility of the Suðurnes police commissioner after a detailed risk assessment involving Icelandic and international experts. Two searchers descended into the fissure and inspected it visually, using search cameras and lights. No evidence was found that could indicate where Pétursson’s remains are located.

The operation was led by the Suðurnes police commissioner’s office, with specialists from the National Police Commissioner’s special unit, the Capital Region Fire and Rescue Service, Sigmenn ehf. and the Kópavogur search-and-rescue team.

Police said the operation concluded the searches considered possible under the risk assessment. Other options were judged too dangerous, and the formal police search is now closed.
