Former Finnish MP Mikko Elo has died at the age of 83, Yle reported, citing the newspaper Satakunnan Kansa.

Elo, who represented the Social Democratic Party, served in Parliament from 1979 to 1991 and again from 1995 to 2007. He was also a longtime member and chair of both Pori City Council and the city board.

In Parliament, Elo was known as a critic of SDP chair Paavo Lipponen. In Pori politics, he was regarded as both an effective and divisive figure. He left the SDP during disputes that divided local party members around the turn of the 2010s, but later rejoined.

Elo was awarded the honorary title of Parliamentary Counsellor.
