Several members of the Sweden Democrats’ party board consider Rickard Jomshof’s remarks about Swedishness problematic, according to sources cited by SVT News, as a debate over the party’s position intensifies after the 2026 election.
The party finished behind the Moderates, putting its stance on Swedishness under scrutiny. Jomshof has pushed back against statements by other senior Sweden Democrats. In a post on X, he wrote that Sweden must acknowledge the importance of biological ties to society to remain strong and cohesive in the future.
Jomshof said biological ties were not the only component, but were one of several that together form “the foundation we call Sweden.” His comments caused anger within the party.
A few hours after Jomshof’s post, senior party figure Mattias Karlsson wrote on Facebook: “Swedishness is not about biology. Nor is one automatically part of the Swedish nation just because one has a Swedish passport.” Karlsson cited wording from the Sweden Democrats’ party programme.
Jomshof’s posts and his recent opposition to the party leadership’s position have prompted questions about his future in the party. A source familiar with the leadership’s work told TV4 News that pressure had increased on party leader Jimmie Åkesson to act.
“Rickard cannot restrain himself. It has not been helpful. His own platform cannot take precedence over the party leadership’s,” the source told the broadcaster.
