Iceland, Reykjanesbraut, road safety

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has introduced a remote-controlled closure system on the westbound Reykjanesbraut highway, mbl.is reports. It is installed at a grade-separated interchange near the aluminum smelter in Straumsvík.

The system allows the highway to be closed at short notice, for example after an accident or when road conditions deteriorate. The agency says it will shorten response times and improve safety for road users and emergency responders.

Closures can now be activated remotely, so police, rescue teams and road agency staff no longer need to travel to the location to set them up, often in darkness and heavy traffic. The closure is carried out in several stages to guide drivers and direct traffic safely.
