Marius Borg Høiby has publicly addressed the violent incident that occurred last weekend while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. In a statement to the media, he expressed remorse towards the woman involved, acknowledging that he committed acts of physical assault and property damage following an argument.

“This incident should never have happened. I exerted physical harm and destroyed property in an apartment while under the influence,” he stated. Høiby, who has struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues, plans to resume treatment for these challenges, emphasizing that his struggles do not excuse his behavior.

Ane Fossum, the director of the Crisis Center Secretariat, highlighted that violence in intimate relationships affects all societal levels and urged a collective response to the issue, which she described as a societal problem. She hopes that this incident will strengthen the engagement of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and the royal family in combating domestic violence.

Høiby was arrested and is facing charges for assault and vandalism against his ex-girlfriend. Fossum indicated that it can be incredibly difficult for victims of domestic violence to report incidents to the police, often compounded by feelings of guilt and shame.

Høiby also apologized to the media for the intense scrutiny faced by his girlfriend during this time, stating, “She did not deserve what happened that night, nor the extreme pressure from both Norwegian and international press.” His lawyer noted the difference between making admissions to the media versus law enforcement and stressed the importance of addressing the police in such cases for it to impact legal proceedings effectively.
