The municipality of Kópavogur will admit children to its preschools twice in 2027, in spring and autumn, mbl.is reported. Applications for spring places are expected to open soon, with places available to children as young as 12 months.

The municipality said the change is intended to better meet the needs of families, make use of places that become available during the year and offer places to younger children when circumstances allow.

Admissions for autumn 2026 went well, according to the municipality. For the first time, children aged 12 months and older were offered places. In total, 592 children born in August 2025 or earlier were admitted. Another 29 children remained on the waiting list at their guardians’ request because they were waiting for a place at a specific preschool.

“With the Kópavogur model, we have achieved excellent results in staffing the municipality’s preschools and helped create stability among employees. This is an important milestone and a positive step for families in Kópavogur,” Mayor Ásdís Kristjánsdóttir said in the announcement.
