NASA’s science division has released a video about a research expedition in Iceland, where more than 30 scientists studied conditions similar to those on Mars and developed methods for searching for signs of ancient life there, mbl.is reports.

The video follows the Southwest Iceland Field Team, or SWIFT, as it investigates Icelandic geological formations resembling those found on Mars. It was posted on YouTube in December last year and highlighted on NASA’s science division Facebook page on Tuesday.

The scientists examined carbon-rich materials and geothermal areas on the bed of Kleifarvatn, a lake. They collected gas, water and sediment samples to study the carbon cycle, which plays a key role in life as we know it.

At Stóra-Laxá, they also studied sedimentary rock formed from basaltic layers. Similar rock formations are common on Mars and have been examined by the Curiosity rover.

The samples will be analysed in laboratories, including to determine their chemical composition. NASA says the research will help scientists develop ways to identify possible signs of ancient life and interpret Mars’s geological history. The findings could support research by rovers such as Perseverance and preparations for future human missions to the planet.
