Iceland urges travellers to check local advice before European trips
Iceland’s Foreign Ministry has urged travellers to check the requirements and guidance at their destinations following reports of protests and unrest in Europe. The ministry’s advice was reported by mbl.is on Tuesday.
The ministry said local rules and guidance can change quickly and that travellers are responsible for preparing for their trips. It has not issued specific warnings to Icelanders travelling abroad, saying it rarely does so, but has referred travellers to advisories issued by other countries, including the Nordic countries, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.
Denmark, Norway and Canada have issued warnings about travel to France, where protests descended into disorder, violence and arson over the weekend.
Denmark’s Foreign Ministry says there is still a risk of riots and violent clashes between protesters and police in some French cities, including Paris. It advises people to stay aware of their surroundings and avoid protests and large gatherings, which could turn violent. The ministry also warns that curfews could be introduced at short notice and urges people to follow local authorities’ instructions.
Icelanders who encounter difficulties abroad can contact the Citizens’ Service. Its emergency phone line is available around the clock at +354 545 0112.
