In a surprising statement on Wednesday afternoon, Marius Borg Høiby admitted to committing violence against his girlfriend while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.

In his statement, Høiby said:

“Last weekend, something happened that should never have occurred. I inflicted bodily harm and destroyed property in an apartment due to an altercation fueled by alcohol and cocaine. I have several mental health issues that have posed challenges throughout my upbringing and adult life. I have struggled with substance abuse for some time, and I have sought treatment in the past. I intend to resume this treatment seriously.

The substance use and my diagnoses do not excuse what happened in the apartment in Frogner early Sunday morning. I want to take responsibility for my actions and will truthfully explain myself to the police. Above all, I must apologize to my girlfriend. She did not deserve what happened that evening, nor the intense media scrutiny that followed. I know it has been difficult for her to be pursued by photographers and journalists during this time.

I also apologize to my family. I recognize that my actions have significantly affected you. So, to my girlfriend, I say I’m sorry. This should never have happened, and I take full responsibility for my actions.”

The statement came as a surprise since he has not yet been interviewed by police. Høiby has been charged with bodily harm and property damage, reportedly involving choking and hitting. His girlfriend is on medical leave but has not been hospitalized or sought a restraining order and is physically fine, according to her lawyer.

The police have not commented on the ongoing investigation, and the royal palace also declined to provide any statements.
