A new study conducted by master’s nursing students at the University of Akureyri indicates that one in three individuals living independently with home care services in Akureyri is at risk of malnutrition. The findings highlight an urgent need for enhanced screening procedures.

According to nurse Sandra Ásgrímsdóttir, one of the researchers, unexpected weight loss is the primary risk factor for malnutrition among elderly individuals receiving home care. The research reveals that 36% of this population shows signs of potential malnutrition if monitoring is insufficient. Given these results, it is crucial to increase attention to such cases.

Recommendations from health authorities suggest that individuals aged 65 and older should be screened annually for malnutrition risks, with more frequent assessments for those at heightened risk. Various factors can contribute to unexpected weight loss, such as the transition from dining with family members to eating alone, difficulties with cooking, or illness which can impair nutritional health.

The study’s findings resonate with similar research conducted in other countries, though some results, particularly regarding higher BMI correlating with malnutrition risk, were somewhat surprising. This data serves as a call to action for more proactive measures in monitoring the nutritional status of elderly residents in independent living situations.
