Anders Holten Lützhøft has created a free app to help people find events and family activities nearby, DR reports. The app, called Jamii, suggests activities based on a user’s location.

Lützhøft, who lives in Østerbro, developed the app after missing events in his neighbourhood and growing frustrated with Facebook’s long, opaque feed. Suggestions can include yoga in a park, communal meals and happy hour at a bar.

Users can indicate whether they are travelling by bike or on foot, whether they need parking and how much time they have. Lützhøft says he hopes eventually to cover the app’s costs, but intends for it to remain free to use.

He developed Jamii in his spare time, having learned to programme from his father as a child. Since its launch on Wednesday, it has been downloaded more than 1,500 times in its first two days and opened 2,600 times in its first four days, he says.

Lützhøft currently adds events himself and is working to let businesses and associations post their own activities. Jamii is available only in Greater Copenhagen for now, with plans to expand across Denmark.

The name Jamii means community in Swahili and, according to Lützhøft, reflects family, togetherness and belonging.
