Shot youth worker is Stockholm municipality employee
The woman shot at a sports hall in Älvsjö, southern Stockholm, on Friday evening works in the municipality’s youth services, SVT reports. Lee Orberson, district director for Hägersten-Älvsjö, called the shooting a “terrible event” and said the municipality’s thoughts were with the woman, her family and affected colleagues.
Hundreds of young people were inside Kämpetorpshallarna, a sports hall complex, when the shooting took place. A floorball match and Spontanfotboll, a Hammarby Football youth initiative run with local youth centres, were taking place there.
The woman was shot on the upper floor, where fewer people were present. Two boys in their late teens were detained on suspicion of attempted murder on Saturday morning.
The district activated its crisis response after learning of the shooting. The municipality has brought in external support for children and young people who were in the area, Orberson said.
Stockholm city increased its presence in Älvsjö on Saturday. Ungdomens hus, a youth centre, was open until 10pm for people who wanted to talk about what happened. Police and outreach workers were also expected to have a stronger presence in the area, with crisis support workers stationed outside the sports hall.
