Faroese singer Eivør will wear a transformed dress with personal meaning at concerts for her new album TUNGL, KVF reports. The dress, once white, has been dyed black and now carries a new symbolic meaning.
Eivør will perform at the Nordic House this weekend. Her costumes and the concert’s visual design are intended to form part of the overall experience, alongside the new music. She has worked closely with designer Maibritt Marjunardóttir, who created the outfits for the shows.
Most of the songs on TUNGL were written shortly after Eivør and her husband, Tróndur Bogason, moved back to the Faroe Islands more than three years ago. She describes the album as a kind of homecoming, with a more inward focus than her previous record and themes including emotion, love, longing and the courage to face the unknown.
The dress was originally worn during the period surrounding Eivør’s album Room, which was written after her father died and dealt with grief and loss. Marjunardóttir suggested bringing it back for TUNGL. The new album includes the song Healer, about how time can mend wounds, and the dress has been reworked as a symbol of that idea.
Eivør said it was moving to wear the dress again. She had stopped using it, but now it has a new life. The upcoming performance will be the first time she has worn it on stage since the Room period.
Eivør and Marjunardóttir have also carried graphic elements from the album into the musicians’ costumes and stage design, bringing the clothes, lighting and music together. Eivør said she was especially looking forward to performing at home in the Faroe Islands.
