A new population projection estimates that 100 people in the workforce will need to support 82 children and older people in 2100, up from 61 today, according to KVF.
The projection was produced by Landsbankin. It uses estimates of life expectancy, fertility and migration into and out of the country. Historical figures run through 2025, while figures from 2026 to 2100 are projections.
Johnny í Grótinum, chairman of the Economic Council, said there is always uncertainty in projections made so far ahead, and changes in assumptions could affect the results. The projected number of dependants is 34 per cent higher than today’s figure.
