Police are asking for information about two hikers missing in Lapland, though they are no longer conducting active searches. They will continue to check every tip they receive, Yle reports.
A 75-year-old woman disappeared near Kiilopää, a tourist centre in the Saariselkä fell region, last November. Her last known sighting was on the Poropolku trail, near a reindeer fence. Police said she was walking northeast along the trail with walking poles.
A 73-year-old man disappeared in March while on a ski trek near Kilpisjärvi. He had said he planned to travel from Kilpisjärvi to Halti. He has not been found along marked routes, and police believe he may have travelled outside them.
Some of the man’s belongings were found at the Saarijärvi wilderness hut, about one kilometre northwest of the Finnish border, on the Norwegian side. Police consider it possible that he continued skiing in Norway.
Police have carried out extensive searches for both hikers. They say the pair may have ended up in the water and could have been carried some distance. Police are asking people who have travelled in the areas this summer to report any walking poles, skiing equipment or clothing they have seen or found.
