Deep low-pressure system brings storm and blizzard risk

Wednesday 14th October 2026 on 09:15 in Iceland

Iceland, storm warnings, weather

A very deep, tightly wound low-pressure system approaching Iceland from the south is expected to bring storm-force easterly winds, heavy rain and possible lightning today, mbl.is reports.

Orange weather warnings are in force for the South, Breiðafjörður, the Westfjords and Strandir, and northwestern Iceland. A yellow warning applies to the capital region, with warnings covering the whole country today.

The strongest winds are expected in the South during the morning. An orange warning there runs from 5am to 10am, with easterly and northeasterly winds of 18 to 28 metres per second and local gusts exceeding 40 metres per second. Heavy rain is forecast in low-lying areas, and loose objects could be blown away.

As the centre of the system moves across the country in the afternoon, winds and precipitation are expected to ease in the south and east. In the northwest, winds will turn northerly, bringing a severe blizzard with considerable or heavy snow and sleet.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office also warns of unusually low air pressure, high waves and a risk of high sea levels and coastal flooding. Where winds blow from the sea, waves could wash over sea defences and harbour walls, and seawater could reach coastal areas.
