Finland, Virolahti, weapons

A large collection of firearms and explosives found in Virolahti, Kymenlaakso, belonged to one person, South-East Finland Police said, Yle reports. The person is interested in firearms and military history and had collected related items.

Police said the weapons and explosives were not connected to the area near Finland’s eastern border or to a weapons cache. The suspect has not yet been formally questioned but has assisted the investigation. Police suspect him of aggravated firearms and explosives offences.

Officers are still examining and cataloguing the large amount of material, and estimate the pre-trial investigation will take months. The Finnish Defence Forces have helped identify and dispose of explosive material.

Police said the case is not connected to weapons seized in Kouvola last year. In that separate case, nearly 100 firearms and a substantial amount of military explosives were found mainly in one man’s possession. More than 5,000 rounds of ammunition, several firearms and firearm parts, and a small amount of explosives were seized from two other men.
