Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson says there is currently no basis for forming a government that parliament would tolerate, SVT reports. She made the assessment after meeting Speaker Andreas Norlén.

“My overall assessment is that progress has been made, but at present there are no conditions for forming a government that can be tolerated by parliament,” Andersson said at a press conference. She cited incompatible positions on the question of government.

Andersson said that because the process had not progressed far enough, a vote at this stage would concern a single-party Social Democrat government. She described Sweden as being in a parliamentary deadlock following the election.

A month has passed since the election. Andersson first received the task of exploring government options on September 18, but returned it to the Speaker on September 28 after the Left Party voted for Norlén, the Moderate Party’s candidate, as parliamentary speaker. Norlén gave her the task again on October 2, and she reported her assessment to him today.
