Tourism generated 1.3 billion kroner in the Faroes last year, excluding short-term rental income, according to KVF, citing the Tourism Association’s annual report. Short-term rentals brought in a further 150 million kroner.
The Faroes received 130,000 foreign visitors in 2025, the same number as in 2023 and 2024. Of those, 70,000 arrived by air and 60,000 by ship. Visitor numbers remain below the 2019 level, before the coronavirus pandemic.
The tourism industry had 600 full-time equivalent jobs last year, 20 more than in 2024. Employment has not returned to its 2019 level.
The Tourism Association said the parliamentary election in the spring disrupted the industry, as proposed legislation and regulations intended to ease conditions for tourism businesses fell away. These included a regulation on home hospitality and proposals concerning short-term rentals, the exclusive right to buy from the alcohol monopoly, and a sustainability fee.
The association also regrets that a tourism course at NámX is temporarily ending because of low enrolment. The course began in 2022 in partnership with NámX and Visit Faroe Islands.
