Andri gets eight years as all six are jailed
All six defendants in the Reykholt case were sentenced to unconditional prison terms on Monday, with Andri Már Mortensen Birgisson receiving the longest sentence, eight years, mbl.is reported. The case concerns the unlawful deprivation of a man’s liberty, extortion and aggravated violence in Reykholt in April 2024.
Ingunn Rut Sigurðardóttir and Pétur Már Mortensen Birgisson were each sentenced to three years in prison. Sigurður Gunnar Ásgeirsson received two and a half years, Níels Pálmar Benediktsson one year and Halldór Logi Sigurðsson six months. None of the sentences is suspended.
The court also ordered the defendants to pay the victim a total of 10 million Icelandic krónur in compensation: four million in non-pecuniary damages and six million in damages.
Andri’s lawyer, Þorgils Þorgilsson, said the length of the sentence had taken him by surprise. He said he expected the ruling to be appealed to Landsréttur, Iceland’s Court of Appeal.
The case stems from an attack in April 2024, when a group of people went to the home of a man of Palestinian origin and Maltese citizenship in Reykholt, in Biskupstungur.
