Six weekly newspapers in North Jutland will stop home delivery from November, leaving readers to collect their copies themselves, DR reports. They may be available at local grocery shops, for example.
The change follows a requirement from FK Distribution, which delivers local newspapers, that customers agree to receive some advertisements if they want the paper delivered to their homes.
Thorkil Christensen, owner of Aars Avis, said the paper had stopped using external distributors because copies could take until Friday to reach readers, even though the newspaper is produced on Mondays. “That is a little too late,” he said.
Christensen expects demand to continue despite the change. He said 75 per cent of residents in Vesthimmerlands Municipality read Aars Avis.
The six papers switching to collection from November are Aars Avis, Farsø Avis, Nibe Avis, Vesthimmerlands Avis, Nørager Avis and Folkebladet Støvring.
Readers in Vodskov, a town near Aalborg, have already been collecting Lokalavisen Vodskov-Vestbjerg-Vadum rather than receiving it at home. Mette Rasmussen said she found it easier to pick up the paper at shops and sports venues she already visits with her children.
Jan Veiby said he used to take the paper straight from his mailbox and put it in the recycling, but now he reads it. Karin Madsen, who works at Vodskov Library, said people come in asking for the newspaper, and copies are sometimes snapped up quickly.
