Iceland’s health minister, Alma D. Möller, met nearly 100 Icelandic medical students during an official visit to Slovakia, mbl.is reported. About 170 Icelanders are currently studying at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in the town of Martin.

The students and officials discussed specialist training in Iceland, conditions for students studying abroad and the future of Iceland’s health system. Möller was joined by Tómas Þór Ágústsson and Ólafur G. Skúlason, directors of medicine and nursing at Landspítali hospital.

Slovak Health Minister Kamil Šaško hosted Möller. She also attended a ceremony marking a stage in construction of a new university hospital in Martin, alongside Prime Minister Robert Fico. Work began in summer 2024, and the hospital is expected to receive its first patients in 2029.

About 200 Icelanders have graduated in medicine from Martin, and around 50 are expected to graduate this year. Graduates from the faculty, like those from the University of Iceland, must complete a one-year foundation programme for specialist training in Iceland.

Möller also visited the spa town of Turčianske Teplice with Šaško. The visit ended with a concert by Icelandic musician Brynja Rán and a band at the Royal Palace Hotel.
