The summit between US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev began 40 years ago on Sunday, according to Morgunblaðið. The two leaders travelled to Iceland to discuss disarmament between the superpowers.

They held wide-ranging talks, including discussions about banning nuclear weapons altogether. The summit ended without an agreement, a result seen as a disappointment at the time.

In retrospect, the meeting has been viewed differently and is sometimes described as an early step towards the end of the Cold War. Morgunblaðið is revisiting the anniversary in its Sunday edition.
