The first snow has fallen in Koillismaa, Kainuu and North Savo, with about 20 centimetres measured in Puolanka, Yle reported.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute says snow officially counts as the season’s first snow when a weather station records a continuous layer of at least one centimetre at 9 a.m. during summer time, or 8 a.m. during winter time.

First snow usually reaches Finland’s northwestern arm of Lapland in late September. In central Finland, it typically falls around mid-October.
