A temporary radar has been installed at Sornfelli to monitor airspace over the Faroe Islands while the existing civilian radar is dismantled, KVF reports.
Denmark’s Defence Ministry said its Materiel and Procurement Agency, FMI, contracted Thales to supply and install the radar.
“The Faroe Islands’ strategic position in the North Atlantic makes it important to maintain a continuous and reliable picture of the airspace while the new radar is being built,” said Colonel Thomas Pedersen, head of FMI’s Air and Space Division. He said the temporary system would ensure continuous monitoring.
Sigurð Ó. Vang, a department head at Landsverk, said the agency had worked with FMI and other authorities to prepare Sornfelli for the temporary radar. Landsverk led the project and provided the infrastructure, he said.
Vang said effective radar surveillance in the North Atlantic was more important than it had been for a long time, given the current security situation. Cooperation would continue on the temporary radar until the new permanent radar was ready to enter service, he said.
