The first snowfall of the autumn reached the Kainuu region on Friday, Yle reported, with rain turning to snow in at least Kuhmo, Paltamo and Suomussalmi at around 1 p.m.

Snow is expected to spread across a wider area towards the evening, while driving conditions deteriorate. A weather warning is in effect for Kainuu and Koillismaa until at least Saturday morning.

Friday’s snowfall does not yet meet the definition of the season’s first snow. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says a weather station must record a snow cover of at least one centimetre at 9 a.m. during summer time or 8 a.m. during winter time.

More snow is likely on Saturday.
