Kópavogur to fund teacher training for school staff
Kópavogur plans to increase the number of teacher-qualified staff in its primary schools by offering study grants to staff who train as teachers while continuing to work, mbl.is reports. The town says the move is intended to strengthen professional teaching, improve stability and maintain a good learning environment for children.
The scheme is part of “The future comes first,” a package of 16 measures approved by Kópavogur’s town council in autumn 2025 to strengthen primary education in the town.
Mayor Ásdís Kristjánsdóttir said the town aims to give staff the opportunity to gain teaching qualifications alongside their jobs. She described increasing the number of teachers as an investment in children, schools and society, and said the goal was to ensure children receive a good education.
The town said it had drawn on its experience in preschools, where staff have been able to combine work and study with good results.
