A new spectator stand and clubhouse at KA’s football ground in Brekkan, Akureyri, is nearing completion and is expected to open next summer, mbl.is reported Thursday.

The stand will have 1,000 seats, with room for a further 200 people at the venue. The building will also house KA’s weightlifting and judo departments, as well as eight new changing rooms.

KA managing director Sævar Pétursson said the club had outgrown its existing facilities. It has had six changing rooms for thousands of participants, and the new rooms will make it easier to host visiting teams for training sessions, matches and tournaments. The building will also provide storage, club facilities and improved meeting space.

The venue hosts the N1 football tournament each July, when thousands of people attend matches involving boys in the fifth division.

Construction company Húsheild-Hyrna is building the stand and clubhouse for Akureyri municipality under a 2024 contract. The estimated cost is 1.8 billion Icelandic krona. The municipality had previously agreed to build a heated artificial turf pitch with floodlighting for about 500 million krona.
