Plans for a new ferry serving Kalsoy have been put on hold while preparations begin for a tunnel to the island, KVF reports. The government will instead prioritise a replacement ferry for the route to Fugloy and Svínoy, Transport Minister Jacob Vestergaard said.

The company Norðoyatunnilin will oversee planning and design work for the Kalsoy tunnel, which is due to begin this autumn. The new ferry will replace Ritan, which currently serves Fugloy and Svínoy, and is expected to carry two cars and 75 passengers.

More than 48 million kroner in unused funding will be carried forward in the 2027 budget, bringing the total available for the ferry to 68 million kroner. The vessel is expected to go out to tender around the turn of the year, and construction is estimated to take about two years.
