Appeals court upholds 16-year sentence for Margrét Löf
Iceland’s Court of Appeal has upheld a 16-year prison sentence for Margrét Löf, who was convicted of killing her father at their home in Garðabær in April last year, mbl.is reports.
Löf appealed the District Court ruling, while prosecutors asked the appeals court to increase her sentence to 17 years. The case also involved an accusation that she attempted to kill her mother, but she was acquitted of that charge in the District Court. Prosecutors accepted that ruling.
The appeals court said there was sufficient evidence that Löf’s parents had endured prolonged and serious domestic violence at her hands and had suffered serious injuries. It found that injuries she inflicted on her father led to his death and convicted her of murder.
Löf was ordered to pay her half-brother a further 800,000 in compensation, in addition to the 2 million awarded by the District Court. The court rejected his request to bar her from inheriting from their father.
The District Court had ordered Löf to pay about 18.4 million in legal costs and defence fees. A further 8.9 million was added on appeal, bringing the total to 27.3 million.
