Vandalism of Elias Lönnrot statue being investigated in Helsinki

Authorities in Helsinki have confirmed that a police report has been filed regarding the vandalism of the Elias Lönnrot statue. The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, is being investigated as an act of criminal damage.

The bronze statue, located in the Kamppi district, was defaced with a red substance, which was found on the faces of both Elias Lönnrot and Väinämöinen. In addition to the staining, the word “colonialist” was inscribed in large red letters on the statue’s pedestal.

Police are actively looking into the matter, and further details about the investigation have not been disclosed.
