Police were called to Vivaldi Stadium, a football ground in Seltjarnarnes, during a match between Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík and Verslunarskóli Íslands on Thursday evening, mbl.is reports. Many spectators appeared to be drunk, and fights broke out.

The match is part of the schools’ annual MR-VÍ week. It is the second year in a row that drinking and disorder have marred the event. An email sent that evening to parents of children at Valhúsaskóli in Seltjarnarnes said many high school students appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Guests at Selið, a nearby youth centre, witnessed fights, and recordings of them were circulated.

The email said matters proceeded properly after police arrived. Officers remained at the ground until the match ended. A similar incident occurred last year when the match was held at Leiknir Stadium in Breiðholt. Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík’s rector, Sólveig G. Hannesdóttir, then voiced serious concern about rising alcohol consumption among students.
