Police detained a student after alcohol use and rule-breaking led to a disturbance at the University of Helsinki’s central campus on Tuesday evening, Yle reported. No crime is suspected.

The incident took place in a student room in the Topelia building. Police said they took one person into custody after responding to a call about disruptive behaviour.

Johanna Viimaranta, dean of the Faculty of Humanities, said alcohol had been consumed in the room and the premises had been left untidy in breach of the rules. The room has been closed to students while the matter is investigated. Extra cleaning was needed, but Viimaranta said she understood that no significant damage had occurred.

The university has not decided when the room will reopen. Viimaranta said it would be made available again after the matter has been clarified and the faculty has discussed next steps with students.

Viimaranta described the incident as exceptional and said the faculty had zero tolerance for use of the room in breach of its rules.
