Researchers and specialists will discuss the Arctic’s mounting challenges at an open symposium in Reykjavík on Wednesday, mbl.is reports. The event, hosted annually by the University of the Arctic and the University of Iceland, takes place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in an event hall at the University of Iceland and is open to everyone. It will also be streamed live.
The symposium is held ahead of the annual Arctic Circle Assembly. This year’s discussions will consider how climate change, geopolitical tensions and competing economic and governance interests are reshaping the region.
Organisers say Arctic communities face growing demand for natural resources, new technology and increased attention, while also needing to protect the environment and the region’s biodiversity. The symposium will bring together researchers, experts and professionals to examine how environmental, political, economic and social changes are connected and what they mean for future cooperation.
Topics include how geopolitical competition and security concerns are shaping Arctic cooperation and governance, how resource demand and new technology can be balanced with conservation, and what can be learned by connecting knowledge from polar regions facing rapid environmental change. Speakers and panel discussions will also address defence and security, links between polar regions, resource development and biodiversity.
