Social Democratic Alliance MP Sigmundur Ernir Rúnarsson says violence is taking root in Icelandic society and called for action by the government, schools and families, mbl.is reported.

Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, Rúnarsson cited a new report from the National Commissioner of Police showing that 346 sexual offences were reported in the first six months of the year. That amounts to nearly two a day, he said.

He called for consideration of responses by police and possible legislation, and said homes and schools also had an important role. He referred to a recent practice of taping young people by their legs and hands and over their mouths, then leaving them outside their homes, saying the resulting psychological anguish could stay with them for life.

Addressing those who commit violence, Rúnarsson said: “You hurt people, but the violence will follow you too for the rest of your life.”
