US Secretary of State Marco Rubio left Iceland after a successful visit, flashing a victory sign as he boarded his aircraft at Keflavik Airport at midday, mbl.is reports.

Winston Churchill, the former British prime minister, made the gesture famous during the Second World War. One of the first photographs of Churchill making the sign was taken during his visit to Iceland in August 1941.

In Iceland, Rubio met Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir and Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir. After a press conference at the Culture House, he briefly visited the US embassy on Engjateigur, then inspected a US Navy P-8 Poseidon submarine-hunting aircraft at Keflavik Airport before departing.

Rubio is due to travel to Athens for talks on regional and energy security. His European trip will end with a brief stop in Lisbon.
